Sonic Unleashed, known in Japan as Sonic World Adventure is a platforming game developed by Sonic Team as part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
Gameplay
Sonic Unleashed is split into two modes; the daytime levels in which Sonic runs at high speeds, and the nighttime levels where Sonic transforms into the Werehog and gameplay switches to a slower paced platformer with beat 'em up elements.
In the daytime levels, Sonic is controlled through fast-moving stages which combine both 3D and 2D gameplay, as the camera will seamlessly shift between the perspectives. New to the series is the Quick Step, which allows Sonic to dodge left and right, and the Drift function, allowing Sonic to take sharp turns without slowing down. The game features the Boost mechanic used in the Sonic Rush games, which dramatically increases Sonic's speed and allows him to blast through enemies and objects in his path. Boost is gained by collecting rings (represented by the Ring Energy bar on the lower right-hand corner of the screen) and defeating enemies.
Nighttime levels feature Sonic transforming into the Werehog, and the gameplay becoming a more traditional, action-oriented platformer. Combat plays a large role in the gameplay, as Sonic will use a large variety of combos and different attacks to defeat enemies. When an enemy's health is drained enough, Sonic can perform a finisher move called a Critical Attack to gain bonus points and larger Chaos Orbs, which act as experience points. XP can be used to upgrade Sonic's abilities such as his top speed and the Werehog's strength. Sonic also gains stretchable arms when in the Werehog form, allowing him to swing on poles, climb ledges, and grab, throw, or spin around dazed enemies. Defeating enemies and breaking objects fills the Unleashed bar, and activating Unleashed Mode makes Sonic's attacks more powerful and allows him to move faster. Moveable crates and switches will be used to solve puzzles and access pathways to the goal.
In addition to the day and night stages Sonic Unleashed features hub-worlds the player can explore. They can use the Rings acquired in stages to buy items, talk to townspeople, and perform side-quests.
Plot
The game begins with Dr. Eggman being pursued by Sonic across a fleet of spaceships above the Earth. After transforming into Super Sonic, he manages to corner the doctor, but Eggman turns the tables and traps Sonic in a new ray weapon. With the Chaos 9
Emeralds drained of their power, Eggman fires a laser into Earth, which unleashes a powerful beast, Dark Gaia, from the core and shatters the planet into seven pieces. Additionally, due to being in close proximity with the Emeralds as the dark energy is being expelled (which is only mentioned in the game's instruction manual), Sonic unexpectedly transforms into a 'Werehog' at night. Eggman then blasts Sonic and the now powerless Chaos Emeralds out into space, who proceeds to fall into one of the shattered continents.

After a rough landing, Sonic befriends a creature who suffers from amnesia. Assuming he caused it by falling onto said creature, Sonic decides to help him regain his memories; Sonic soon nicknames him 'Chip' after seeing him drool over a chocolate sundae. Sonic then runs into Tails, who takes him into Spagonia to meet Professor Pickle after mentioning he has insight over what has happened to the world. Pickle explains to Sonic that Dark Gaia is a beast that naturally grows over thousands to millions of years and the world has broken apart multiple times before, and that by restoring the Chaos Emeralds' power the continents can be put back into place.
After restoring six of the seven continents, Chip finally remembers who he is; he is actually Dark Gaia's opposite, Light Gaia. He tells Sonic that both he and Dark Gaia have been in a cycle where Dark Gaia splits the world apart and he proceeds to put it back together since the beginning of time, but due to Eggman splitting the world apart himself, both of them were awakened prematurely; this resulted in Dark Gaia breaking apart and Chip suffering from amnesia. After locating the final Gaia Temple (which happens to have EggmanLand built on top of it) and restoring the last Emerald, Sonic is confronted by Eggman, who has used Dark Gaia's energy to build the Egg Dragoon, or 'Ultra Hyper Prototype-1' as Eggman puts it. The two sink into the planet's core during the battle, where they finally encounter Dark Gaia. Eggman orders the creature to kill Sonic, but it turns on him and blasts him off into the depths of space. Dark Gaia then absorbs the energy that turned Sonic into a Werehog, curing him of it, and then uses the energy to become more powerful.
Chip protects Sonic from Dark Gaia's attacks and summons the Gaia Temples to create the Gaia Colossus and fight the beast head-on, but the battle is far from over as Dark Gaia shrouds the entire world in darkness and transforms into Perfect Dark Gaia. Together, the Gaia Colossus and Super Sonic defeat Dark Gaia and finally bring the chaos under control. However, the battle takes its toll on Sonic, who is then thrown back to the surface by Chip as the final continent seals him back inside the planet. With Chip's necklace left behind, Sonic places it onto his hand as a bracelet to remind him of their adventure before speeding off with Tails, flying alongside him on the coastline in the Tornado.
Why It Rocks
- This is the Sonic game that laid the foundation for later entries in the series such as Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations.
- New moves such as the Quick Step and Drift abilities are introduced.
- Plenty of extras to buy or discover such as concept art, musical pieces, and souvenirs.
- The cutscenes are really good, for any Sonic game.
- Excellent and well thought out story that is right in balance, Sonic and Chip's freindship is often considered very light hearted.
- Terrific sense of speed.
- Levels shift from 3D to 2D perspectives.
- The levels are based on real-world locations, allowing for unique level aesthetics and themes.
- The Werehog's combat mechanics are quite satisfying and there are tons of combos to unlock.
- Beautiful and smooth graphics; this is the first Sonic game to run on Sonic Team's Hedgehog Engine.
- Many epic and amazing boss battles.
- In the Night-Time levels Sonic can collect yellow colored diamonds that at any time in a level the Player can upgread ether States for Sonic The Werehog.
- The art-style is very appealing; the locations Sonic visits are stylized and the human characters look like they were designed and animated by Pixar. This works well with Sonic's cartoonish design, especially compared to Sonic the Hedgehog(2006) where Sonic and his friends simply clashed with the realistic setting.
- Excellent soundtrack.
- Great voice-acting. This is one of Jason Griffith's best performances as Sonic, and it shows.
- Memorable stages (eg. Rooftop Run, or Apotos Day).
- The hub worlds lets you explore a lot of new locations that you didn't know (except for the PS2 and Wii versions).
- The Tornado levels are fun.
Bad Qualities
- In order to access levels you need to have a certain amount of Sun and Moon Medals, collectibles you find during stages or in the hub world. The problem is that in the daytime levels, the medals are almost impossible to spot due to the fast pace and strict level design.
- The camera control is very inconsistent; sometimes you can control it manually, but other times you can only move it left or right as though it were a shaky cam.
- At times, the frame-rate can be incredibly choppy; Empire City and the water-running and jungle sections of Adabat in particular are very unstable.
- Sonic doesn't always have a drop shadow, making platforming more difficult than necessary.
- The final level, Eggmanland, is infamous for being very long and full of deathtraps (excluding PS2 and Wii versions). The final boss (although not the worst) has also been reviled for the same reasons.
- Some of the DLC are way too obnoxious. One of the DLC day stages in Holoska, requires Sonic to get to the other end of the stage with the time limit. The problem is that, whenever you boost around the ice or a small platform, Sonic will slip, and start running on the water, which is then hard to get back on the platform. Even when your drifting and boosting around the drift section, Sonic will sometimes glitch into the snow, and not get out. If you do, Sonic will then die (demonstrated by YouTuber cobanermani456).
- The Wii and PlayStation 2 versions are poor ports and are missing some content like the Empire City location that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 ports contain.
Reception
The game received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, who praised the title for its graphics, soundtrack, and daytime levels while criticizing the nighttime portions and plot.
There have also been debates over which version of Sonic Unleashed is better; the PS2 and Wii versions have higher Metacritic scores than the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions (66 compared to 60 and 54, respectively); some review sites such as IGN and GameSpot even rated the latter two versions lower than Sonic 2006. However, some Sonic fans have felt the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are better and criticized the other versions for the limit on the boost gauge and the levels being too spacious and empty.
Trivia
- The game is titled Sonic Unleashed in NTSC-UC and PAL regions, however, it was re-titled Sonic World Adventure in the NTSC-J region, which is what the Xbox 360 demo is titled in some cases internally.
- The plot in some ways is very similar to Star Fox Adventures.
- The character Chip was going to be called Whip, like the whip cream, however, Sega worried that people might refer it to whipping someone with a whip, so they came up with Chip, like chocolate chip.
